Brom: Krampus

29 Dec 2012 · No Comments

Krampus mixes a familiar, if competently drawn, macho fantasy of a down-on-his-luck guy trying to win back his estranged bride with the conflict between Christianity and Norse beliefs, personified in the opposing midwinter present/punishment dispensers, jolly Saint Nicholas and the frequently frightful Krampus. The odd blend is seasoned by a generous spatter of grue. I like the portrayal of Krampus: neither good nor precisely evil, he’s as unpredictable as an old god should be. I wasn’t sure for a long time if Jesse, the reader’s human envoy to Krampus’s world, was more protagonist or anti-hero, but he eventually declared himself to my satisfaction.
